WAR headstart: Tortoise and the hares

It appears I have angered the Work Gods, and they are raining their displeasure down upon me in the form of meetings, training sessions, project deadlines and a couple invitations to dinners in the city. Ok, so it’s not all bad πŸ™‚ However, as the WAR launch fast approaches, I’m looking more and more like a tortoise in the race to 40.

I’ve been so busy that I didn’t pre-order, so I’ll be starting on the 18th. It was bad enough thinking that a lot of my friends were going to race off ahead of me during the head start, but it’s going to be even worse as I have lots to do during the first couple weeks of launch.

I haven’t played the Open Beta. I did make a character, did a /who Casualties, saw people at 15 already, and got discouraged πŸ™‚ I also couldn’t stand the thought of trying to furiously level to catch up, only to have that character get deleted. I also had a kid emergency (she’s at the age where the idea of Bigfoot and aliens and the Loch Ness Monster seem frighteningly alive as you’re trying to go to sleep), so I had to log off anyway.

I’d be bummed about missing out on the early leveling rush if WAR didn’t appear to have such a good end game. I’m pretty confident that even turtling along to level 40 behind the people with more time to play will allow me to have a blast with the guild in the end game excitement. I just have to fight down that feeling of “being behind” as I see other CoW’s leveling like mad πŸ™‚

I suspect there will be others in the guild who have similar RL responsibilities, and I’ll find plenty of people to group with. I was just hoping to overdose on an MMO at launch for the first time in a couple years…hmm, since WoW launched, I guess. I’ll still get to OD, it’ll just be a few weeks later than everyone else. Save me a spot on the ramparts of some big end-game keep!

  1. Not everyone is levelling like mad. I have altitis, so that’ll slow me down. Also, I’m determined to at least *try* to be a content ho on at least one char — doing things like trying to do all chapter 2 public quests (level 4-9ish) in all three pairings (or at least 2 of them, I’m not so keen on the dwarf area) and so on.
If you’re starving for company come the 18th, all you need to do is holler on /guild. You might be surprised at the response. Also, we had a level 4 tank with us yesterday on our RvR rampage — level isn’t as vital within a level tier as it may be in other games. Sure, he needed some care and attention, but he did pretty well too.

  2. Rick man dont worry about it. I will be right there with you and besides if we level ahead it gives us a reason to make alts. Plus you CAN level quikcly in this game, even in PVP, which is startingly EASY. Just do the scenario in the start area over and over and you get REALM POINTS and XP, its great and fun.

Relax dont worry about it it is what guilds are for sir!

  3. The CASUAL of Casualties stands for something. There are going to be plenty of people who take their time to level.

  4. Noob, gfto of the guild carebear.

You’ll be fine, WAR looks to be designed to drive fans of alts crazy, so I’m sure tons of people will have characters in all tiers.

  5. I’ll be back there leveling slowly with you; in fact this post is very encouraging to me! πŸ™‚

I’m an alt-aholic too. Plus I just don’t put in the hours that a lot of folk do. And i figure WAR is going to be around for a good long run, so there’s no real hurry.

Looking forward to fighting beside you!

  6. We have our hardcore levelers, but I bet you’ll see me lagging. I’m in the same boat as you with school and other obligations, Rick.

No worries, you’ll have people to RvR with. πŸ™‚

  7. Happily it seems like levelling up isn’t quite the chore it is in some other games, and I’m sure lots of guildies (myself included) are in similar boats juggling work, home, and limited time for fun.

Besides protecting your own castle from Bigfoot, aliens and the Loch Ness monster is already pretty heroic work! Kudos on a job well done πŸ™‚

Look forward to running into you in-game.

  8. I’ll be a bit hardcore at first. Took Wednesday through Friday off and cleared my weekend. The wife has been preparing for the five-day loss of her husband. The stars have aligned.

But will I really get a lot of leveling done?

Playing Open Beta I seriously felt like a raccoon that stuck its paw into a hole to grab a shiny object and then couldn’t pull its hand back out. I got to level 5 on a Sword Master and found myself quite content to stay there for a couple days playing numerous scenarios of Khaine’s Embrace and the first PQ to acquire all the loot I possibly could.

For the first time in a long time in an MMO, I didn’t feel like leveling was the most important thing. Sure, the end game content is going to be great. Do I need to get there first? Not really. It’ll be there for me. I guess we’ll just see how it goes.
